"The Philosophers" was a common name for Athens given to them by a different civilization. Athens was very important to Greece, Athens can be easily identified by their symbols as in their acropolis (heavily fortified hill or mountain), Athena of course, and thier Elite Navy. The government of Athens was a Direct Democracy, meaning that citizens would directly vote for goverment desisions. They were a very strong economy in Greece, much like The New York Stock Exchange, they aquired wealth from mainly trade, it made them filthy rich and when they had Pericles at their command, they were at thier peek of power. Pericles was a great leader who lead the military and the civilization. He started his rule after Athens had almost been destroyed by the ticked-off Persians who were mad they had lost the war, so they torched the great acropolis, Pericles went on to build back Athens to it's former glory and made the civilization better than before, he added sculptures and art to Athens and made it wealthy again. He later died by the plague epidemic. Athens seemed to be the leader of Greece even though there was no United Nations back then, but at a point in Greek history, before Greece collapsed they were once united.
